Seminars & Events

We undertake all work regularly conducted in the criminal courts at all levels and our practice encompasses all aspects of dishonesty, violence, sexual offences and drugs offences.  A selection of some of the more recent, and high profile, instructions include the following:

£5m Proceeds of Crime
Our client is charged with laundering the proceeds of crime on betfair.com an internet betting company which has itself recently been in the news with respect to the fact that it is one of the great dot com success stories.  Our client and his co-accused are supposed to have laundered over 5M.

Data Protection Registration Fraud
Instructed to represent two clients in a large scale fraud which arises in Merseyside and Greater Manchester and concerns bogus companies set up by the defendants to induce small companies and businesses to pay an inflated fee so that they are registered with the Information Commissioner in Wilmslow Cheshire. This would be to fulfil their statutory obligations under the Data Protection Act.

DRUG TRAFFICKING
HB are acting for a Merseyside couple alleged to have laundered the huge profits made by their son who has been convicted of serious drug trafficking offences. The money runs into the millions and represents overseas properties, city centre penthouse apartments and shares.

The couple’s assets have been frozen by a Judge pending the outcome of the trial which is not scheduled to take place until the end of 2007 and that fact highlights a major defect in the law.

The Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 prohibits any individual whose assets are frozen in similar circumstances from utilizing his own money to pay for legal representation to attempt to overturn the restraining orders..

CONCEALING THE PROCEEDS OF CRIME
HB has just successfully acted for a teacher of impeccable character who with three other members of her family was accused of concealing the proceeds of serious crime committed by their father.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering offences, and whilst he was being held on remand at Walton prison a suitcase of his containing a quarter of a million pounds was literally hawked around members of the family and was eventually secreted in a bedroom wardrobe at our client’s sisters address.

ASSISTED SUICIDE
HB act for an academic accused of assisting his friend and one time partner to commit suicide.  The lady in question had a troubled background and was likely to have been suffering at the time of her tragic death from a mental illness.  It is not alleged by the Prosecution that the defendant committed any overt act such as would have directly caused her death but that his alleged assistance in other more passive ways was enough to justify a prosecution.  Assisted suicide is an emotive subject and one much in the news..

RACIALLY MOTIVATED MURDER INVESTIGATION
Hogan Brown has taken instruction on one of the most high profile murder investigations in several years - the unprovoked attack on 18 year old A-level student Anthony Walker.
